Coming out of his shell…

Apparently Yago is emerging from his shell.

It was just until a few days ago that I would walk around the corner and peek into his classroom only to find him sitting on his lunch box behind the door.  He would be waiting.  If he had eaten lunch earlier than usual that day, he’d even have a tear in his eye.  One day I entered the classroom only to hear, “I told you Yago. I was right and you were wrong.”  Yago’s friend had told him that his mom was going to be here soon and he had insisted that she’s not coming.  The friend went on and on about how right he had been.

For the last several days at pick-up I have had to wait.  and wait. and wait. and wait. and wait for him some more to get ready to go.  I get there and he hasn’t finished lunch, or hasn’t finished cleaning up lunch.  And then there’s the chorus of good-byes.  Yago just beams and waves good-bye.  There’s suddenly no sign of that shy little boy anywhere…

His teachers tell me that he’s quite the comedian these days.  On Friday he ate lunch with some of the older kids and apparently had them rolling.  Today the teachers heard him laugh the most incredible belly laugh they had ever heard out of him.   One teacher said that it has been fun watching Yago come out of his shell.   My response was, “now you see what I get to put up with.”  :)

I am glad that the Yago I know is now the Yago they know too.  I hope his silliness stays within the boundaries of acceptability.  I hope he continues to love school and get excited about seeing all of his friends.

Now, if I could just get him to stop whining that he doesn’t want to go in the morning!!

Give me one good reason, please.

If you had been a fly in our car on the way to school Wednesday, you would have overheard this conversation.

Yago:  Mom, I don’t want to go to Montessori; not today.  (This is the way we start every conversation on the way to school.)

Mom:  Silence (I always pretend that I didn’t hear or understand what he was saying the first time.)

Yago: Mom, I don’t want to go to Montessori; not right now.  (As if ‘today’ vs ‘right now’ is going to make a difference)

Mom: Why not? Give me one good reason, please.

Yago: (Looking pitifully at his knee) I have a scratch.

Ready, Set, Go!

Yago was excited about his first day of school.  If you don’t believe me, see for yourself:

"Patata!"

On the way to school, I was taking music requests.  At first he asked for Tik-Tik-Tak from one of the Putumayo Kids CDs.  We LOVE those CDs!  Next, he asked for “crying baby”.  Somehow I realized that he was really asking for “Wheels on the Bus.” Don’t ask me how I deciphered that code.  We sang along happily all the way to school.

Yago was a little shy when his teacher came to extract him from the car.  When I picked him up at noon, yhough he had had a good morning!  (And his second day was upgraded to a “great morning” according to one of his teachers!)

He is challenged in this classroom and I like that because it keeps him busy.  I am always excited to pick him up after lunch and find out what he did.  I wish he would tell me more about his day, but I guess that’s just payback.  My mom reminded me about my answers after school every day of my life:

How was school?  “Fine”

What did you do? “Nothing”

Did you ______? “No”

Did play with _____?  “No”

At least Yago answers more than “No” when prompted, but I seriously have to fish around and name the activities and students in his class.

I am sure there’s a way to extract more information out of my son.  I just haven’t it found it yet.

We are thrilled and couldn’t be happier with his new classroom!

“Walking” around

Daryoosh loves to “walk” around and takes steps as we walk him around the room holding onto his hands.

At almost 9 months, he semi-crawls too.  At least he’s started slithering forward by bending his left leg and digging his foot into the ground and then straightening it again to move forward.  He got a little frustrated because it was the 3rd time I took away his little toy to watch him crawl to get it!  (meanie, I know!) Check it out:

And finally, yes, it looks like he may enjoy kicking a soccer ball just like his brother (who also learned to kick a ball before taking his first steps).

First Date.

Daryoosh had his first date on Thursday.  They even held hands.

Unfortunately, this relationship is doomed since she will be going back home to the west coast soon.
